Featured in a recent article about working with hot glass, you can appreciate the patience and skill needed to make one...let alone a whole army of penguins! I'm glad you like them. It's really simple actually. I make them with soft glass, although I bet if you got boro hot enough you could do it, I just prefer soft glass colors for penguins.
So, you get a little gather of your penguin body color (these guys are trans cobalt, but I also make some in black, and I made a friend of mine neon green and purple) and then you put on a strip of color for the belly out of whatever your belly color will be, to do that just heat up the tip of your color and then swipe it on to keep a nice round top. Then I add the feet so that they slightly overlap the belly, dunno why, I think it makes them cuter, just put two dots of your foot/beak color on and heat them up enough so they're malliable, but not so much that they fuse, and then just press it on your graphite pad to flatten it. So, I'm going to assume that you've been keeping the penguin body nice and flashed while this has been going on, so you can take another stick of your body color and fuse on a nice hot punty to the back, and pull it out slightly into a tail thick enough to support it but thin enough to break it off with a pinpoint flame. After that you want to gather up a smaller ball while you're breaking off the stick that your body has been attatched to, suitably head sized, and then pick up a stick of white. Put on two white dots wherever you want your eyes to be, and melt them in. Then, take some black (you can do either a stringer or a rod tapered into a point depending on how big you want the pupils) and then you just place the pupils on wherever you want them, depending on the expression (cross eyed, shifty, innocent, etc.). Then take the same color you used for the feet and put on a beak, just dab it on and pull it out to a point. After that you can either break it off there, or you can add things to the top (these little guys have berets) although ive also done apples, I did a taco for my friend once, and I've got a collection that I recently submitted into a juried exhibition that are covered in all sorts of random things (a tophat, fire, bubbles, one of them has a fake moustache, a pair of purple cat ears, a winter hat with a poof ball on it, and a piece of chocolate) that I did as a self-portrait series.
so yeah
thats how you make a penguin ^____^
